The childhood home og Olav Duun

Olav Duun grew up on the island, mostly on Dun (Øver-Don), near the village center on Jøa. He lived at home until he was 25 years old, worked on a farm, and participated in winter fishing for eight or nine winters. Out there, he experienced changing weather and nature.

He saw how storms could whip up the sea and make conditions difficult and dangerous both on land and at sea.

Jernaldergården Janheim

In a small bay facing west, right by the sea and sheltered from the modern world, lies the longhouse Janheim. Built from timber, stone, and turf—with an open hearth for cooking over a fire, and doors that open wide to the ocean and sky. It is modeled after the Iron Age house that stood here 2,000 years ago, built with deep respect for the people who once lived with and from nature. In the 27-meter-long house, there is plenty of space for sleeping and dining—perfect for those seeking an experience far from the ordinary.
