Olav Duun Foundation in Namdalen

Duun grew up on the island, mostly at Dun (Øver-Don), near the village center on Jøa. He lived at home until he was 25 years old, worked on the farm, and participated in winter fishing for eight or nine winters. Out there, he experienced changing weather and nature.

He saw how storms could whip up the sea and make conditions difficult and dangerous both on land and at sea.

Welcome to Olav Duun's Childhood Home

The Olav Duun Foundation in Namdalen, referred to as ODIN, is a significant part of the living cultural heritage on Jøa. The municipalities of Namsos, Overhalla, Nærøysund, Leka, and the Olav Duun family make up the foundation.

ODIN aims to make Olav Duun's poetry known, and wants people to experience Olav Duun's poetic landscapes on Jøa and along the Namdal coast.

Every other year, the foundation organizes the Olav Duun Festival in Namdalen. In 2026, it will be 150 years since Olav Duun (1876 – 1939) was born.

Olav Duun's most famous works include: Juvikfolket (1918 -1923), Medmenneske (1929), and Menneske og maktene (1938).

Opening Hours

Olav Duun's childhood home will be open daily from July 6th to August 4th, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
