Michael Rott
There's a lot happening at the Matgarasjen these days. Many have read and heard about the chef who started walking from Germany three years ago, towing his house on wheels behind him. Recently, he has been wandering along the roads in Namdalen. We love the concept of exciting guest chefs in the kitchen - and couldn't let this opportunity pass by. Literally. To make a long story short - his house is now parked next to the Matgarasjen, and chef Michael Rott is already busy in the kitchen. On Sunday, June 2nd, he will be serving, among other dishes, slow-roasted short ribs from the farm's own Wagyu blend, seasoned with his unique homemade herb spices.
What do you take with you when you need everything to live in a tiny house for several years? For Michael Rott, the answer includes two handmade chef's knives, chef's attire, kitchen utensils, loads of his own herb spices – a fishing rod, a mattress – and some other small items. Since April 2021, the German chef has been walking much of the way from his hometown Chemnitz towards Norway, aiming for the North Cape before he plans to continue into Finland. But now – and for the next few weeks, he's with us at Jøa.
Michael loves to forage for edible plants, wild and cultivated, to use in his cooking. And he's come to the right place, as we share this passion at Dun Farm. Everything is growing now, in the herb beds and out in nature, and this week we're planting the vegetable plants for both the community-supported agriculture and the farm's market garden.
We feel incredibly fortunate when opportunities arise to collaborate with skilled master chefs, whether they're from Namsos, Germany, India, or other places. How long Michael will stay is not yet known, but he will surely be found in our kitchen until June 9th.
And he's not the only exciting chef with us this summer.
